Mark Sampson: climate change comedian

In 2013 comedian Mark Sampson left Cape Town to go ‘Africa Clockwise’: drive clockwise around the continent in a 10 ton truck that runs on recycled vegetable oil.

Africa Clockwise is also the title of his last comedy show, which premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2011, and played at the Liberty Theatre on the Square in Johannesburg and at the Masque Theatre in Cape Town in 2012 to rave reviews.

In 1999, Mark Sampson was founder of the Cape Comedy Collective, mentoring Loyiso Gola, Riaad Moosa, Kagiso Lediga, Kurt Schoonraad, Stuart Taylor, Nik Rabinowitz and many others before MC’ing the CCC at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003. He toured three solo stand-up shows to theatres nationally, and had sell-out seasons at the National Arts Festival from 2005-11. Before he set off around Africa, he performed at COP17 in Durban for the EU, hosted the world’s largest sustainability conference Sustain Our Africa and launched the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Campaign. He also won the award for best presentation at SAASTEC’s 18th Conference at the UniZulu Science Centre in 2016.

While en route, Sampson has performed shows for ambassadors in capital cities to chiefs in villages, explaining climate challenges and sustainability solutions to kids from primary to tertiary level and to staff in WVO-donating hotels across the continent.
