In 2013 comedian Mark Sampson left Cape Town to go ‘Africa Clockwise’: drive clockwise around the continent in a 10 ton truck that runs on waste vegetable oil and solar power. So far the Sampson family has travelled 23000 km, crossed 20 countries and broken down 15 times, while enjoying warm African hospitality, fabulous surf and palm-fringed perfection at beaches all along the West Coast.
Mark Sampson was founder of the Cape Comedy Collective in 1999, mentoring Loyiso Gola, Riaad Moosa, Kurt Schoonraad, Nik Rabinowitz and many others before MC’ing the CCC at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003. He toured three solo stand-up shows to theatres nationally, and had sell-out seasons at the Grahamstown Festival from 2005-11. Before he set off around Africa, he performed at COP17 in Durban for the EU, hosted the world’s largest sustainability conference Sustain Our Africa and launched the City of Cape Town’s Climate Smart Campaign.
Mark Sampson will be in Cape Town and available to perform the following in South Africa over the summer season 2016-17 :
- stand-up eco-medy set
- audio/visual presentation on the Africa Clockwise trek with Q&A component
- conference MC and panel facilitator
- motivational speaker sharing African solutions to climate change challenges
